How to Hide Photos From Someone (Without Being Weird About It)

Whether it’s a surprise gift, a nosy friend, or handing your phone to a kid, here is how to keep certain photos out of sight — and what genuinely works versus what only looks private.

The everyday case: keep them out of the camera roll

Most of the time the worry is simple: you hand your phone over and someone swipes through your photos. The fix is to get the sensitive ones out of the camera roll so a casual scroll finds nothing:

• Hide them into Apple's Hidden album (••• → Hide). They vanish from your main grid.
• On iOS 16+, the Hidden album is locked with Face ID by default.
• Hide the album from view entirely: Settings → Photos → turn off Show Hidden Album, so there's no "Hidden" folder to even notice.

What only looks private

Some tactics feel safe but aren't. Putting photos in a normal album doesn't remove them from the main library. And "vault" apps that copy photos into a container can upload them to a server or lose them if you forget the password. Know what you're actually getting.

The honest limit

Hiding out of the camera roll defeats the everyday case perfectly. It won't stop someone determined who knows to open Albums → Hidden with your Face ID — no built-in feature will. For that you'd need an encrypted vault, with its own downsides. For the normal "please don't stumble on these" worry, hiding is exactly right.
