How to Hide Photos on Your iPhone (The Complete Guide)

The fastest way to hide a photo on your iPhone is Apple's built-in Hidden album. But it has real limits, and if you have more than a handful of private photos, there's a smarter way. Here's everything.

The quick way: hide a photo in the Hidden album

1. Open Photos and tap the photo or video you want to hide.
2. Tap the More button (•••) in the top-right corner.
3. Tap Hide.
4. Confirm Hide Photo. It moves to the Hidden album and disappears from your main library, Moments, and Years.

To hide several at once, tap Select, choose the photos, then ••• → Hide.

Lock the Hidden album (iOS 16 and later)

On iOS 16 and later, the Hidden album (and Recently Deleted) are locked behind Face ID or Touch ID by default. To confirm it's on, go to Settings → Photos and make sure Use Face ID (or Use Touch ID) is toggled on. Now the album won't open without you.

You can also hide the album from view entirely: Settings → Photos → turn off Show Hidden Album. The Hidden album then disappears from your Albums tab until you switch it back on.

The limits of the Hidden album (important)

The Hidden album is convenient, but be clear on what it is and isn't:

• It's a known location. Anyone familiar with iPhones knows to look in Albums → Hidden. Face ID helps, but if your phone is unlocked and someone has your face or passcode, they're in.
• The photos are still in your library. Hiding doesn't remove or encrypt them; it just moves them out of the main grid.
• It syncs. With iCloud Photos on, hidden stays hidden across your devices, and un-hiding reveals everywhere.
• There's no "find them all" step. If your private photos are scattered across years, you still have to locate each one to hide it.

That's a lot of caveats, but here's the honest scope: for the everyday worry — handing your phone to someone who then swipes your camera roll — the Hidden album is ideal, because your hidden photos simply aren't there. It's only "not secret enough" against someone determined to go digging (and defeating that means an encrypted vault, with the downsides below).

The real problem: finding them all

Hiding one photo is easy. The hard part is that intimate or private photos pile up over years, mixed in with thousands of ordinary ones. Scrolling your entire camera roll to find them is slow, unpleasant, and easy to get wrong — miss one and it's still there when you hand your phone over.

Cloud tools (Google Photos search and the like) can find things, but only by uploading the exact photos you least want on someone else's servers. That's the opposite of private.

What to avoid: vault apps that copy your photos

Many "photo vault" apps move your photos into their own encrypted container. That creates three headaches:

• You can lose them. Forget the password or delete the app and those photos can be gone for good.
• Some upload to the cloud. A "backup" feature quietly sends the exact photos you wanted kept private to someone else's servers.
• It's a lot more work. You now have a whole second photo library to manage — importing, deleting the originals, and keeping two places straight every time you take a new photo.
