Photo Vault vs. Apple Hidden Album: Which Is Actually Safer?

Should you lock private photos in a third-party "vault," or just use Apple’s Hidden album? Here is the honest comparison — they solve different problems.

What each one actually does

Apple's Hidden album moves photos out of your main library, in place. They're still in Photos, just not in the grid — reversible anytime, and locked with Face ID on iOS 16+.

Photo vault apps copy your photos into their own encrypted container, separate from Photos. More hidden, but a separate silo you now own and maintain.

The trade-offs

Vaults are more secret — the photos are fully out of Photos, behind the app's own lock. But that comes at a cost:

• Data-loss risk. Forget the password or delete the app and those photos can be gone for good.
• Some upload to the cloud. A backup feature can send the exact photos you wanted private to a server.
• More work. A whole second library to import into, keep in sync, and remember to use.

The Hidden album avoids all three: nothing to lose, nothing uploaded, no second library. Its one weakness is that it's a known location — not a secret against someone determined to dig.

Which should you use?

Match it to your actual worry:

• Everyday discretion (handing your phone over, casual snoops) → the Hidden album is ideal, without the downsides.
• Defeating a determined, technical snoop who will go through your device → a vault is more secret, if you accept the data-loss and upload risks.
